Open Ph.D. Positions:

All funded Ph.D. postions are currently filled.

Note - In general all candidates are expected to already hold a Master's level degree in Computer, Electrical, or Software Engineering or related field (i.e., Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics).

  • UVic policy dictates that people who only hold bachelors degrees cannot enter a Ph.D. program directly.

    • There is the possibility though for exceptional students to transfer into a Ph.D. program from their M.A.Sc. program (where ''exceptional'' is generally in terms of production achieved over the first year)
    • It should be noted that some universities, particularly in the U.S., do accept Bachelor's students directly into Ph.D. programs – functionally though this is no different than the UVic systems since students who ''wash out'' in the Ph.D. program end directed to get a Master's degree.
    • At UVic the transfer to a Ph.D. (from a Master's) comes after there is a reasonable expectation that you will succeed in the Ph.D. - not before.

  • NSERC funded positions:

    • Must follow NSERC Graduate student funding guidelines.
    • Must follow ECE Dept. funding guidelines.

  • Non-NESRC funded positions:

    • May or may not have similar guidelines (depends on funding source)
    • Can be used to ''top-up'' NSERC scholarships (for students holding them)
    • Must follow ECE Dept. funding guidelines.

Security Research Oriented Positions

Currently all of the open, funded security oriented positions have been filled.

  • There are still opening for students who hold scholarships or who have their own funding to pursue security oriented research within the InSPiRe lab.

    • Such students have the advantage of having somewhat more discretion in choosing their dissertation projects, provided they fall within the general InSPiRe lab goals.
    • Funded positions tend to be more directed to specific research areas and research questions due to the nature of the grant they are under.

Distributed Systems Research Oriented Positions

Currently there are no open, funded distributed systems oriented positions available, since all the current positions in this area have been filled at the Master's level.

  • There are still opening for students who hold scholarships or who have their own funding and wish to pursue distributed systems oriented research utilizing the InSPiRe lab facilities.

    • If you are seeking such a position, please follow up with the exact nature of the position/research you want to pursue.
    • Depending on the research area a co-supervision with another faculty member in ECE or Computer Science may be suggested if that would be in the best interest of the student.

Research in non-Security/Distributed Systems Oriented Positions

Dr. Neville is currently not actively pursuing research activities outside of the above two areas, as these areas are both quite broad in and of themselves.

  • Students who hold scholarships or who have their own funding to and wish to pursue Ph.D. level research which would make active use of the InSPiRe lab facilities are encouraged to apply and will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
  • Areas of research which may apply:

    • Web data mining
    • Grid computing
    • etc.

  • Depending on the research area a co-supervision with another faculty member in ECE or Computer Science may be suggested in such cases if that would be in the best interest of the student.
  • A number of active industrial and governmental collaborations already exist within the InSPiRe lab, and it is expected that the number of these will continue to increase.
  • Where possible and where there is student interest, reasonable effort will be made to involve scholarship and self-supporting Ph.D. students into these research projects, with the intent of such involvement leading to downstream funding possibilities, if and when such additional funding becomes available.
  • Where possible and where there is student interest, reasonable effort will be made to involve scholarship and self-supporting Ph.D. students into these research projects, with the intent of such involvement leading to downstream funding possibilities, if and when such additional funding becomes available.

    • Ph.D. students will be actively encouraged, and where possible financially supported, to participate in national level collaborations facilitated through these initiatives.
  • For larger-scale research projects and activities and where feasible, an intent exists to team Ph.D. students with available M.A.Sc. students on the same project to enable:

    • The Ph.D. students to focus more directly on the theoretical aspects which need to be addressed.
    • While the Master's students pursue the more functional aspects.
    • In this way, both degree programs should be completed in more timely manners.
    • Funding and student availability issues may limit this process (but, one such ''teaming'' is underway with two more just seeking the appropriate Master's student)
